January 1995 Saint Helena became an official AVA even though it is home to some of the most important producers including one of the oldest, Charles Krug. Krug is owned by Peter Mondavi and family. It was started in 1861 by Charles Krug a Prussian immigrant.
The first wines produced did not get much respect as they used too much Mission grapes in the blend. This was changed in the late 1870’s and by 1880 foreign grapes were replacing the Mission grape in much of St Helena. Foreign being mostly French.
The Saint Helena Star was started in 1874, it is today a part of the Napa Valley Register.
